Overview

Emfovir is a combination of two medications and it contains Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate and Emtricitabine as active ingredients. This tablet specifically belongs to a group of medications known as antiretrovirals. This medication is used to treat HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection and managing AIDS (Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). Emfovir tablets help in decreasing the amount of virus from the body. To avoid side effects like diarrhea and dizziness, keep yourself hydrated and get plenty of rest.

Pharmacodynamics

Emtricitabine (Emfovir): It is a synthetic nucleoside analog of cytidine. This compound is phosphorylated by cellular enzymes for the formation of emtricitabine 5′-triphosphate. Emtricitabine works to inhibit the activity of the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) through competing with the natural substrate deoxycytidine 5′-triphosphate and by incorporating it into nascent viral DNA resulting in chain termination. The compound is a weak inhibitor of mammalian DNA polymerase alpha, beta, epsilon, and mitochondrial DNA polymerase gamma.

Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (Emfovir):- It needs initial diester hydrolysis for converting it to tenofovir and subsequent phosphorylations through cellular enzymes for forming tenofovir diphosphate. This compound is particularly an acyclic nucleoside phosphonate diester analog of adenosine monophosphate. It works to inhibit HIV-1 RT activity by competing with the natural substrate deoxyadenosine 5′-triphosphate and, after incorporation into DNA, by DNA chain termination. Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate is known to be a weak inhibitor of mammalian DNA polymerases alpha, beta, and mitochondrial DNA polymerase gamma.
