Usage
A urethral catheter is a hollow flexible tube for insertion into a body cavity, duct, or vessel that allows the path of fluids or distends a passageway. Its intended uses are the drainage of urine from the bladder via the urethra or insertion through a blood vessel into the heart limited to diagnostic causes only.
Adverse Events
The following are a few of the adverse effects associated with the use of a urethral catheter:
- Burning with urination
- Blood in the urine
- Urinary Tract Infection
- Malposition
- Inadequate Relief of Obstruction
- Encrustation
- Stent Fracture
- Ureteral Erosion or Fistulization
- Forgotten Stent
Contraindications
A dual lumen catheter is not intended for use in the following cases:
- Gross hematuria
- Evidence of urethral infection
- Urethral pain or discomfort
- Low bladder volume/compliance
- Patient refusal
- Blood at the meatus
