Overview

Abalam (Abacavir and Lamivudine) tablet is a combination of two antiretrovirals medicines. It is used in the treatment of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection. This medication is not a permanent cure for HIV infection. It helps to boost your immune system to fight against infection and prevents the virus from multiplying and also increases the CD4 cell (white blood cells that protect against infection) count in your blood. It is important to take this medicine as prescribed by your doctor. It is advisable not to change your regular dosing schedule without taking suggestions from your doctor. If you experience any signs and symptoms while receiving this medicine, inform your doctor immediately.

Pharmacodynamics

Abacavir (Abalam):- It is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) with activity against Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1). It is phosphorylated to active metabolites competing for incorporation into viral DNA. They work to inhibit the HIV reverse transcriptase enzyme competitively and act as a chain terminator of DNA synthesis.

Lamivudine (Abalam):- It is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) with activity against Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1) and Hepatitis B (HBV) to disrupt viral DNA synthesis. It can form active metabolites when phosphorylated, that compete for incorporation into viral DNA. Via DNA incorporation, lamivudine metabolites work to inhibit the activity of the HIV reverse transcriptase enzyme and then act as a chain terminator of DNA synthesis.
