Pharmacodynamics
Pharmacotherapeutic group: Enzyme inhibitors
ATC Code: L02B G03
Altraz (Anastrozole) is a potent and non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor. Estradiol is produced in postmenopausal women through the conversion of androstenedione to estrone via the aromatase enzyme complex in peripheral tissues. Estrone is converted to estradiol. Reducing circulating levels of estradiol has been shown to produce a potential benefit in women who have breast cancer. In postmenopausal women, Altraz at a daily dose of 1 mg has shown to produce estradiol suppression of greater than 80% using a highly sensitive assay. Daily doses of Altraz (Anastrozole) up to 10 mg do not have any measurable effect on aldosterone secretion or cortisol when measured before or after standard adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) challenge testing. Therefore, Corticoid supplements are not needed.
